The Department of Virology perform virological and serological diagnosis of infectious diseases of domestic, farm, wild and zoo animals. For this purpose, we use a comprehensive portfolio of diagnostic methods for direct (isolation, PCR, etc.) or indirect (ELISA, IPMA, etc.) detection of viral, bacterial or protozoan pathogens causing animal diseases. We also provide health examinations for moving animals across the Czech Republic or exporting them abroad. For the needs of State Veterinry Administration, we monitor the health status of animals.

Our laboratory diagnostics is complemented by consulting and advisory activities, providing expert opinions and interpreting results. As part of the activity of the reference laboratory for BVD, we coordinate eradication programs. The virology department includes a specialized TSE laboratory, which tests samples of prion diseases – BSE in cattle and scrapie in small ruminants.

There are 7 reference laboratories operating inside the virology department:
NRL for Classical swine fever and African swine fever
NRL for viral diseases of fish
NRL for bluetongue
NRL for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR/IPV)
NRL for BSE and animal transmissible encephalopathy
NRL for horse plague
RL for bovine viral diarrhea (BVD/MD)
