HISTORY

To ensure the health of the population, it was necessary to control the quality of food of animal origin and to protect the health of livestock from the spread of diseases.
In Jihlava, the first mentions of veterinary activity date back to the Protectorate period. Bacteriological examination of meat directly at the slaughterhouse took place as early as 1943. However, the Protectorate Decree officially introduced veterinary laboratory activity from April 1, 1944.
After the Second World War II, the laboratories acquired new premises in a villa at Telecska Street 13. The conditions for the increasing number of samples and employees were no longer bearable in the villa, so in 1960 it was decided to build a new complex of laboratories, including a veterinary hospital in Horni Kosov. The construction of all the buildings took a total of 7 years.

In 1991, after the end of central management, 15 subsidized organizations of the Ministry of Agriculture were established. During the following years, these institutes were abolished or privatized for economic reasons. In 2013, the ministry reduced the number of enterprises to three, when State Veterinary Institute Ceske Budejovice became a part of State Veterinary Institute Jihlava.

BSE was first detected in the Czech Republic in 2001. Following the Swiss model, a new laboratory was established in Jihlava for the diagnosis of this disease, which subsequently became the National Reference Laboratory. The number of samples increased in a short time to 200,000 per year, of which almost half were examined in Jihlava in two-shift operation.

The most well-known topic of 2018 and 2019 closely related to our workplace was African swine fever in the Czech Republic. In cooperation with hunting associations and the State Veterinary Administration, we examined thousands of samples in our National Reference Laboratory. We consider it a great success that we were the first of the affected states to successfully eradicate the disease.

The global pandemic of the disease COVID-19 in 2020 also affected the activities of our company. To support the continuity of patient diagnostics in the Highlands Region, we examined human biological samples for the presence of the SARS CoV-2 virus.

We work intensively not only on new diagnostic methods and scientific projects, on the Certification Body for products, but also on relations with our business partners. The new section for consulting and customer care individually communicates the needs of customers and meets the specific requirements of individual organizations.

During the period from 1949 to the present day, only nine experts held the position of director: MVDr. Jaroslav Jakes, MVDr. Jaroslav Krejci, MVDr. Vladimír Krepelka, MVDr. Zdenek Kolar, MVDr. Frantisek Gurka, MVDr. Karel Kren, MVDr. Josef Holejsovsky, Ph.D., MVDr. Ladislav Zamek, MVDr. Pavel Bartak, Ph.D. Each director was personally involved in the development of the State Veterinary Institute and contributed to the stability of the health of the population and animals in the Czech Republic.
